Institutions in New Zealand
The 2009 Academic Ranking of World Universities, released by Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China, recently featured five of New Zealand's eight universities in its 'Top 500' list. The eight state-funded universities offer world-class facilities and teaching staff, and qualifications gained at New Zealand institutions are valued throughout the world.
Tertiary education in New Zealand is delivered by a variety of providers. Universities, Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics (ITPs), Private Training Establishments (PTEs) and Industry Training Organisations (ITOs) deliver different educational options. In addition to the academic education offered by the universities, the courses offered at the 20 state-owned ITPs can include vocational options and short full-time and part-time courses.
New Zealand's Ministry of Education operates a Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students. New Zealand was the first country to set out standards for the care of international students, and all institutions that take international students are dedicated to their welfare.
There are between 700 and 800 registered Private Training Establishments (PTEs), including a number of registered private English language schools.
